Third STEP to Impregilo

Impregilo has been awarded the third and final lot on Abu Dhabi’s 40km underground Strategic Tunnel Enhancement Programme (STEP). Worth US$200M, the contract includes the construction of 10km of 7m diameter water tunnel. In September 2009, the Italian contractor was also assigned the US$243M contract to build the first 15km of tunnel on the mega project put out to international tender by the Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC). Rio Tinto invests in research centre

Rio Tinto is teaming up with world leading researchers to create the Rio Tinto Centre for Underground Mine Construction. The work will assist Rio Tinto develop The Mine of the Future™ programme, which focuses on significantly improving the construction of underground mines through the use of mechanized tunnelling technology. Breaking News – Copenhagen awards Circle Line

The Salini/Technimont/SELI JV has been awarded the contract to build the 15.5km of twin tunnels and 17 stations on the US$3.8bn Copenhagen Metro City Circle Line. Construction is due to start next year with completion scheduled for 2018 (City Circle Line denoted by the Blue and Orange lines on the map). Read more

BTS resurrects ‘Underground Construction Conference & Exhibition’

The British Tunnelling Society, in partnership with the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, the ITA, and the Pipejacking Association, is re-convening its previously popular Underground Construction Conference & Exhibition series after a lull of some six years. The two day event, to be held on 29-30th June 2011 at London’s Earl’s Court Conference Centre, is being resurrected in the light of the burgeoning workload for the UK tunnelling sector, with projects such as Crossrail and the Thames Super Sewer on the horizon. A call for papers has just been issued. Read more

Aecon awarded $279M Spadina Southern Tunnels contract in Toronto

Following a public opening of bids earlier this month, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) awarded its Sheppard West Station and Southern Tunnels contract, for the CA$2.63 billion Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE), to Aecon Buildings on Thursday, 18 November. Aecon – along with its tunnel subcontracting JV – won the contract with a bid of CA$279,078,688 million. Read more

Hong Kong immersed tube award

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Authority has announced China Communications Construction Co as winner of the design and build contract for the artificial islands and 6.7km long immersed tube tunnel section of the US$5.5bn, 29.6km long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB). Read more

Tel Aviv seeks Expressions of Interest

Tel Aviv’s government owned NTA is seeking expression of interest from international design firms for the implementation of the city’s US$3bn, 23km long Light Rail Transit Red Line, which includes 11.5km of tunnel with 10 underground stations. Read more

Brighton’s first breakthrough

A significant milestone has been reached on Brighton’s US$480M Cleaner Seas for Sussex scheme when ‘Alice’, one of two 2.4m diameter Lovat TBMs being used on the project, broke through at the Marine Drive Pumping Station, completing the first of three drives being delivered for client, Southern Water, by the 4Delivery JV, consisting of Costain/MWH/United Utilities. Seymour Capilano Breakthrough

On November 4, 2010, contractor, the Seymour Capilano Partnership (SCP) achieved the final breakthrough of the second of two 3.8m diameter Robbins TBMs on Canada’s 7.2km long Seymour Capilano Water Filtration Project, bringing to a conclusion more than two years of hard rock tunneling in a four-year period.
