Major new tunnelling for LU’s Bank

London Underground has begun consultation with the City of London on plans for major improvements to Bank Station which will include significant new tunnelling works. If agreed, work is due to start in 2015 for completion by 2021. Read more

Pinglu Tunnel breakthrough

The Sino-Austria Hydraulic Engineering Co. Ltd (SAHEC) JV, led by Alpine Bau GmbH, has completed excavation of one of the world’s longest single-drive TBM tunnels, the 25.4km long, 4.8m diameter Pinglu Tunnel on the most recent leg of China’s Yellow River Water Diversion Project. Read more

Minimum 10 TBMs for Malaysia MRT

MMC-Gamuda JV has been appointed Project Delivery Partner (PDP) for the US$11.5bn, 150km+ long Kuala Lumpur MRT. The project comprises three new lines with some 56km of TBM tunnelling worth some US$4.5bn. A minimum of 10 TBMs will be needed to tunnel through the region’s Karstic Limestone, Kenny Hill Formation and Granite. Site construction work is due to start for the first line in July 2011, with major construction contracts let throughout next year. World’s largest TBM accepted

The world’s largest TBM, a 15.62m diameter Herrenknecht EPBM, has been accepted by the contractor JV Vianini Lavori /Toto Costruzioni Generali/Profacta, for use on the construction of the 2.5km long twin bore Sparvo road tunnel on Italy’s A1 highway between Florence and Bologna. Read more

OHL is apparent low bid for Spadina north

OHL Canada has submitted the apparent low bid on Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Highway 407 Station and Northern Tunnel’s contract, for the CA$2.63 billion Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE). OHL’s $404,387,000.00 bid came out ahead of a number of other bids including: Dragados Canada/Ellis Don JV at $409,870,000.00; and Kenaiden/Obayashi/Flatiron JV at $459,721,000.00. Read more

Bangalore Metro Phase I design award

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC) – a JV of Soma Enterprise Limited, CEC International Corporation India (CICI) and the contractors for Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) – to provide technical consultancy services for the 4.5km long East–West underground metro in Bangalore, India. Dragados wins Alaskan Way Tunnel

Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP), comprising Dragados-USA, Tutor Perini and HNTB, has submitted the apparent best value design-build bid for Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct (SR 99) Bored Tunnel Replacement.

STP’s price offer came in yesterday – December 9th – slightly higher than runner-up, Seattle Tunneling Group (which includes SA Healy, FCC Construction, Parsons Transportation Group and Halcrow). However, the Dragados-led group earned almost twice as many technical credits based on its schedule, design and surface settlement mitigation proposals, resulting in a lower net value calculated by Washington State Department of Transport (WSDOT).
