Stuttgart 21 major tunnel award

German rail operator, Deutsche Bahn has awarded the US$386M contract to build the 3.8km long Bad Cannstatt Tunnel on the massive Stuttgart 21 project to the Alpine/Hochtief/Wayss & Freytag JV. The project is scheduled for completion by 2018. Read more

HS2 awards four EIA contracts

HS2 Ltd has awarded the remaining four contracts under Lot 3 Environmental Services of HS2 Ltd’s Professional Services Framework. The successful companies will work closely with HS2 Ltd’s environment, design and engineering teams to help reduce the environmental impacts of the scheme, from London to the West Midlands, where practicable and produce a detailed assessment of the environmental effects. Douglas Oakervee appointed HS2 Chair

Douglas Oakervee has been appointed as the new chair of HS2 Ltd, the independent company set up by the Government to deliver a high speed rail network between London and the North of England. He will commence working with the HS2 Ltd team in April. Read more

Sochi breakthrough

On February 14, 2012, the final of two Robbins Double Shield TBMs crossed the finish line in Sochi, Russia.  The machine wrapped up tunnelling at Complex 3, part of a massive transportation upgrade of road and rail routes for the city’s 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Read more

Crossrail announce tunnel fit-out shortlist

Crossrail has announced the shortlisted for the major fit-out of the new rail tunnels. The indicative value of the C610 contract is in the region of US$633M. Tender documents will be issued to the shortlisted organisations in April 2012, with the C610 Systemwide main works due to begin when the tunnelling drives are completed in 2014. Breaking News – MMC-Gamuda wins Kuala Lumpur MRT tunnelling

The MMC-Gamuda JV has won the 9.5km long tunnelling contract for the My Rapid Transit (MRT) line between Sungai Buloh and Kajang in Kuala Lumpur with its bid of US$2.6bn, project owner MRT Corp announced today. MMC-Gamuda is also the project delivery partner (PDP) to run the construction of the 51km line, which is the country’s largest infrastructure project and still without a total budget. Vinci wins final Crossrail portal

Crossrail has announced its intention to award the contract for the last remaining tunnel portal at Victoria Dock, C340, to VINCI Construction UK Ltd. Construction will get underway in autumn 2012. In line with European procurement rules the contract award is subject to a ten-day standstill period. Read more

Tragic tunnel coach crash kills 28

Twenty Eight people including 22 children have been tragically killed following a coach crash in a tunnel near Sierre, in Switzerland’s Canton of Valais. Reports from the site indicate the coach hit with the tunnel’s right hand wall before colliding head-on with the headwall of an emergency access niche. “The bus hit the barrier stones on the right side of the road. It then hit the tunnel wall front-on in an emergency stop space,” police said in a statement. Read more

Sound Transit has selected North STAR (Seattle Tunnel and Rail) – a joint venture of CH2M HILL and Jacobs Engineering – as its top-ranked firm for the Construction Management Contract for Seattle’s North Link Light Rail Project, in Washington. The team also includes Hatch Mott MacDonald and about 15 other sub-consultants, mostly local small business firms. Read more
