Milestones reached on London power tunnels

Entrustment Agreement signed for Shatin to Central Link

Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation has announced that it has entered into an Entrustment Agreement with the HKSAR Government for the construction of the main works and commissioning of the 17km long, US$4.6bn Shatin to Central Link (SCL). The line is split into two phases between Tai Wai in the north and Admiralty on Hong Kong Island. Phase 1 runs for 11km, 10.6km of which is underground between Tai Wai and Hung Hom Stations, whilst the 6km long entirely underground Phase 2 continues the line from Hung Hom to Admiralty with a 2km crossing of Victoria Harbour. Moscow Metro boring due in June

Specialists with the SK MOST Group of Companies are completing assembly of the 6.15m diameter Herrenknecht TBM which will drive the 1.8km long left interstation tunnel between subway stations Lermontovsky Prospekt and Vykhino on the Moscow Metro. Tunnelling is scheduled to begin in June. Read more

Hong Kong tenders TM-CLKL Tunnel

The Hong Kong Highways Department has issued a prequalification and tender notice for the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link – Northern Connection Sub-sea Tunnel Section that includes a 5km long dual 2-lane sub-sea tunnel between Tuen Mun and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities. Japanese tunneller’s bodies found

The bodies of four tunnel workers missing since Thursday following an explosion some 1.2km into a 2.8km long tunnel under construction in Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture, Japan were located and recovered in a rescue operation on Sunday morning, according to local firefighters. Read more

Poor safety is likely blame for deadly Hunan tunnel blast

Preliminary investigations have confirmed that the truck suspected of causing a deadly blast in a highway tunnel under construction in Hunan, Central China, was in serious violation of safety regulations. The blast – which took place in the 2,355m long Baimianshan tunnel at 8.20am, last Saturday (May 19) – killed 20 of the 24 people working in the tunnel at the time. Read more

BBMV JV complete first Crossrail SCL tunnels

Crossrail’s BBMV JV (Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering, Alpine BeMo Tunnelling, Morgan Sindall and VINCI Construction) has completed the projects’ first two sprayed concrete tunnels. The tunnels, under Finsbury Circus in the City of London, are part of the C510 contract – Early Access Shafts and Spray Concrete Lining works for Whitechapel and Liverpool Street station tunnels. The two tunnels are part of the Liverpool Street Station section. The 4.5m diameter tunnels have been built from the main access shaft within the Finsbury Circus worksite. Read more

April 10, 2012, marked a milestone in the construction of the 16.45km long Metro Line 9 in Beijing, when a 6.28m diameter Cat® EPBM made a major breakthrough in a section with very difficult geological conditions. Read more

First Crossrail TBM breaks ground

Crossrail’s first TBM, Phyllis, has broken ground at Royal Oak to begin construction of the mega-project’s first section of tunnel between Royal Oak and Farringdon. Read more

Arup wins Chile Metro work

Arup has been appointed by Metro de Santiago to lead the concept design of 11 stations in the Chilean capital. The scope of the project covers some of the most challenging stations on two new lines being built by the operator – Lines 3 and 6 – and the work will involve creating interchanges with existing lines on the metro network.
