Matias joins Normet UK

From October 2012 Sergio Matias has joined the Normet UK team as the Technical Manager for underground construction and mining. Matias is part of a 10 man team dedicated to supporting tunnels contractors, mining companies and designers. Read more

Crossrail Eastern TBM assembly underway

Crossrail has marked another major milestone in the construction of London’s new rail line with the lowering of the first 7.18m diameter Herrenknecht EPBM to work on C305, the £500M Eastern Tunnel section being constructed by the Dragados/Sisk JV. Elizabeth was lowered into a 40m deep shaft in east London last night (Thursday) and is being prepared for launch on her 8.3km journey to Farringdon. Read more

Qatar win for Impregilo

Impregilo has won the tender issued by the Public Works Authority of Qatar for the design and build of a 9.5km long storm water drainage tunnel for the collection of the surface and groundwater in the city of Doha, capital of Qatar. The contract has a value of approximately US$130M. Read more

Strabag picks up the pace on the Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer

All four owner-procured 3.6m (11.8ft) diameter Caterpillar EPBMs are now in the ground (three currently mining) for Regional Municipality of York’s CA$546 million Southeast Collector trunk sewer project, just north of Toronto, Canada. Read more

After more than two years as Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Caterpillar Tunneling Canada Corp, Klaus Ukens has accepted a position within Caterpillar Mining and has relocated to Dortmund, Germany.  In this new role Klaus will be responsible for shaping Caterpillar’s Global Underground Mining Strategy. UBS to assist in Super Sewer financing

Thames Water has confirmed to TJ that it has hired Swiss Bank UBS to ‘provide financial advice’ in relation to delivering the £4.1bn, 32km long, 7.2m diameter Thames Tideway Tunnel project, or Super Sewer as it has been nick-named. Read more

KL MRT Corp confident of agreement

A two hour meeting between Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (MRT Corp) and concerned property owners in the Jalan Sultan area looks set to have resolved various technical issues concerning the Kuala Lumpur MRT tunnel alignment in the area. Property owners agreed to hold a detailed technical meeting with MRT Corp’s project engineers to iron out several technical matters related to the tunnel construction beneath their properties. Heijmans to build new Eindhoven station tunnel

ProRail has awarded the contract for the construction of the new Eindhoven station tunnel to Heijmans. The contract is valued at over €32M. Work planning will start immediately, construction will start in the 1st quarter of 2013 and the entire project will be completed by the summer of 2016. Read more
