Atlas Copco to acquire MEYCO

Atlas Copco AG has agreed to acquire the Switzerland-based MEYCO Equipment business from BASF Construction Chemicals Europe AG. The acquisition broadens Atlas Copco’s offering with mobile equipment for applyingsprayed concrete (shotcreting) in underground operations. Read more

Niagara gears up for commissioning

November 15 marked yet another milestone for Ontario Power Generation’s 6.4-mile (10.2km) long Niagara Tunnel Project, in Canada. With 10 steel stop-logs – weighing in at 215 tonnes – in place at the tunnel intake, main contractor Strabag successfully filled the intake channel with water from the Niagara River. Read more

Billy Bishop gears up for launch

Two 1.8m diameter rock TBMs, nicknamed “Chip” and “Dale”, have arrived at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA), in Toronto, Canada. The machines, which were transported to the site in November 2012, were purpose-built by tunneling contractor Technicore to drive a series of arch support drifts for the airport’s long-anticipated 200m (656ft) pedestrian tunnel beneath the Western Channel of Toronto’s Inner Harbor. The tunnel will replace the current passenger ferry service to Toronto Island, where the airport’s runways are located. Read more

Crossrail’s 4th TBM starts her journey

The latest addition to Crossrail’s tunnelling team – 1,000 tonne Victoria – has begun work, joining sister tunnelling machine Elizabeth to create the eastern section of the new rail line between Docklands and central London. The two machines will create the 8.3km eastern tunnels from Docklands to Farringdon – Crossrail’s longest tunnel section.

Terratec delivers EPBM to Delhi

Terratec has announced that on Thursday, November 29th, the first of six TBMs for the Delhi Metro Phase III was delivered to the client after a successful performance of the workshop testing. The official ceremony was held in the presence of representatives from the client – a JV between Metrostroy O.S. of Russia and ERA Infra Ltd. of India – after seven months from receipt of order, a record for this class of machine. The second TBM for this project will be delivered to the JV before the end of the year. Read more

Rideau Transit Group scoops Ottawa ‘Confederation Line’ LRT contract

City of Ottawa staff have selected the Rideau Transit Group consortium as their preferred choice to design, finance, build and maintain the city’s CA$2.1 billion light-rail transit system. The announcement was made at a press conference yesterday, Wednesday, December 6th, at City Hall, with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, Mayor Jim Watson and other dignitaries in attendance. Treasury loan guarantee for Northern Line Extension

The UK Chancellor, George Osborne, has unveiled £5bn of investment spending by 2015, which includes the provision of a $1bn loan and guarantee by the Treasury for London Underground’s Northern Line extension. The project will extend the West End branch of the Northern Line from Kennington to Battersea Power Station and includes 3km of TBM driven twin-tube tunnels and two new stations. Read more

Missing anchor bolts could be to blame for Japan tunnel ceiling failure

At a press briefing on Monday, the Executive Officer of the Operator of Japan’s Sasago Tunnel – which experienced a catastrophic collapse of its ventilation ‘false’ ceiling over a length of 110m on Sunday, killing nine motorists – said that it appeared some ‘anchor bolts’ used to secure the concrete slabs to the tunnel roof were missing.  Read more

Crossrail constructs 1000th ring

Crossrail’s first TBM, Phyllis, has constructed her 1000th tunnel ring under London’s Hyde Park. It comes as the Crossrail project completes excavations for Tottenham Court Road’s western ticket hall at Dean Street, starts excavation for Bond Street station’s western ticket hall in Davies Street as well as continued progress at Paddington.
