Second Avenue Subway worker rescued after four-hour recovery effort

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) suspended work on a section of the Second Avenue Subway project early Wednesday morning (March 20), following a dramatic four-hour rescue effort to save a worker who became trapped in saturated soft ground 75ft (22m) below ground at the project’s 96th Street Station Cavern. London Underground (LU) has issued an OJEU pre-tendering procurement notice for the delivery of the £400M – £600M Northern Line Extension to Battersea Power Station, which includes the construction of 3.3km of twin-bore 5.2m i.d. running tunnels and two new stations, one at Battersea and the other at Nine Elms. Hong Kong SCL win for Leighton

Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited, a part of the Leighton Asia, India and Offshore Group, has secured an US$680M contract from the MTR Corporation to construct a critical component of its 17km long, predominantly underground Shatin to Central Link (SCL) development in Hong Kong – the Hung Hom Station and Stabling Sidings Contract 1112. Breakthroughs on Milan’s Line 5

Both EPBMs boring the Milan Metro Line 5 twin-tube tunnels have successfully broken through at Cenisio station and are now progressing well along the rest of the drives, SELI has announced. TBM S-388 broke through at Cenisio station on 22/01/2013 followed by TBM S-238 on 16/02/2013. TBM S-388 is currently at 1,118.04m (of 2,193.09 or 51% of tunnel) whilst TBM S-238 is currently at 756.38ms (of 2,198.9 or 34% of tunnel) Read more

US contractor awarded construction of mysterious Israeli underground complexes

Last year it was announced the US was looking to build a secret underground complex in Israel. On February 13 a contract was awarded to Conti Corp Federal Services in Edison, NJ, to complete the project. Their bid of almost US$63 million came in well below the possible US$100 million set aside for the project. Read more

‘Bertha’ the world’s largest TBM is ready to be shipped to Seattle

Following testing at Hitachi Zosen’s manufacturing plant in Osaka, Japan, ‘Bertha’ – the world’s largest-diameter TBM to date – is ready to be shipped to Elliot Bay, in Seattle, Washington. The 57ft (17.5m) EPB machine will begin excavation of Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) US$1.35bn (State Route-99) Alaskan Way tunnel, beneath downtown Seattle, this summer.
