Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP), Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) design-build contractor for the SR-99 (Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement) Tunnel Project, has taken the first step toward identifying and removing a potential TBM obstruction that halted the progress of the 57.5ft (17.52m) Hitachi Zosen EPB machine ‘Bertha’ last week. Near the banks of the Black River, a 7m (23ft) diameter Robbins Double Shield TBM and continuous conveyor system are starting up. The mammoth machine was built using Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA), a Robbins-developed method that saves contractors in shipping time, costs, and man-hours worked.
The first elements of the 9.84m (32.3ft) diameter Caterpillar mixed face EPBM, which will be used to excavate the 2km (1.25-mile) long bored tunnel section of the new Evergreen LRT Line, have now begun to arrive at the project’s TBM launch site on the west side of the Barnet Highway, in Port Moody, Vancouver, Canada. Aldo Ceresola has joined Bekaert’s Swiss Dramix team. Ceresola has some 20 years’ experience in underground construction – particularly in the field of segmental lining. After an introduction to the Swiss market Ceresola will be responsible for all of the company’s tunnelling activities in Switzerland as from 1st of February 2014. Read more
On 22nd of November 2013, Terratec delivered the last two of eight (8) TBMs for Delhi Metro Phase III. The TBMs were officially unveiled at a ceremony that included representatives from the client, a joint venture between Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. of India and Samsung Engineering & Construction Group of Korea.
