Herrenknecht supplies 15 TBMs to Doha

Herrenknecht will deliver 15 x 7m diameter EPBMs to the Doha Metro, the company has officially announced. At the Herrenknecht plant in Schwanau on Monday the Minister of Transport of the State of Qatar, HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, with his delegation composed of senior representatives of the client Qatar Rail and the JV QDVC/GS Engineering & Construction/Al Darwish Engineering as well as a representative of the Embassy of Qatar, inspected the first machine completely finished and ready for use.

Harbor Siphon’s Sandy restart

New York’s Harbor Siphon Tunnel project is set to restart in the coming months, with testing and final repairs to the project’s 12ft (3.6m) diameter Caterpillar EPBM due to take place in mid-February. The project has been on hold since October 2012, when Hurricane Sandy’s Category 1 storm surge slammed the project’s work site on Staten Island, and breached the flood defenses put in place by the contractor. Record-Setting Robbins TBM breaks through in Mumbai

A celebration ensued among crew and Robbins Field Service following the 6.25 m (20.5 ft) TBM’s breakthrough

On January 21, 2014, a Robbins Main Beam TBM completed one of the longest and deepest water supply tunnels in Asia, the Mumbai Water Tunnel. The 6.25 m (20.5 ft) diameter machine displayed excellent performance throughout the 8.3 km (5.2 mi) bore, and achieved impressive advance rates along the way. Read more

Peru launches concession for US$400 million Lima water project

Peru’s private investment promotion agency ProInversión has launched the tender for a US$400 milion Lima potable water concession. The project has three major components: a 10km trans-Andean tunnel to transfer water from the Pomacocha lagoon to the Blanco river; the upgrade of the Huachipa potable water plant to produce 5m³/s; and the construction of the 25.6km south branch water uptake and distribution pipeline to deliver water to Lima’s southern districts. Planning begins on a Northern California pumped‐storage hydroelectric project

The Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) has awarded a Jacobs Associates-led team the Owner’s Engineer contract for preliminary design and construction services on its proposed Iowa Hill Pumped‐Storage Project. If constructed, Iowa Hill would be a 400MW underground pumped storage hydroelectric facility located near the town of Camino, roughly 50 miles (80km) east of Sacramento. Read more

Caterpillar sells tunneling assets to Chinese partner

Caterpillar Tunneling Canada Corporation (CTCC) has entered into an agreement to sell substantially all of its assets (real estate, machinery, and intellectual property) to Liaoning Censcience Industry Co Ltd (LNSS). The transaction, subject to certain conditions, is anticipated to close in the third quarter of 2014 after the completion of CTCC’s final contracts for the supply of tunnel boring machines. Damaged main bearing seal is source of Seattle’s SR-99 shutdown

Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP) – Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) design-build contractor for the SR-99 (Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement) Tunnel Project, in Seattle, US – has identified damage to the main bearing seal system as the underling source of high-temperature readings that, combined with a clogged cutterhead, lead to the shutdown of its 57.5ft (17.52m) Hitachi Zosen EPB machine ‘Bertha’ two months ago.
