Mott MacDonald appointed on NZ$2.86 billion upgrade of Auckland City Rail Link

Mott MacDonald, as part of an integrated team, has been appointed to undertake the reference design for the NZ$2.86 billion upgrade of the City Rail Link (CRL) in Auckland, New Zealand. Mott MacDonald is using its global rail knowledge to develop the project on behalf of Auckland Transport. Other team members include Aurecon, Jasmax and Grimshaw. Read more

Concrete liner complete on Billy Bishop

On May 26, the Toronto Port Authority (TPA) announced that the completion of the concrete liner in the Pedestrian Tunnel at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (BBTCA), moving the project one significant step closer to providing an efficient and convenient access route for travellers to Toronto’s downtown airport. With the completion of the liner, the tunnel will now move into the mechanical and electrical installation phase before final finishes are put in place this winter. Read more

Robbins double shield completes Black River Tunnel

A Robbins Double Shield TBM achieved a timely finish at the Black River Wastewater Tunnel in Lorain, Ohio, where it broke through on April 29. The 1.7km (1-mile) long EPA-mandated tunnel will prevent heavy rains from triggering sewage overflows into the Black River, which empties into Lake Erie. The 7m (23ft) hard rock machine reached excellent advance rates in the area’s soft shale, averaging 21m (70ft) per day. Read more

Mayor proposes 35.2km long ‘Inner Orbital Tunnel’ for London

Preliminary plans have been drawn up by the Mayor of London’s office and Transport for London that could see a 35.2km long, semi-orbital tunnelled road system constructed in the capital at a cost of up to £30bn to improve quality of life as well as air quality in the city. Read more
