Crossrail 2 preferred route announced

Another Brenner win for Strabag

STRABAG, in a consortium with the Italian construction companies Salini Impregilo, Consorzio Cooperative Costruzioni CCC and Collini Lavori, has signed a €300M contract to build the Eisack Undercrossing section of the Brenner Base Tunnel. Work is scheduled to begin this year with a planned construction time of around eight years. Read more

STP begins rescue pit excavation

Seattle Tunnel Partners has started excavating the circular pit crews will use to access and repair Bertha, the stricken 17.5m diameter Hitachi Zosen SR 99 TBM being used to bore the 2.7km long Alaskan Way Viaduct Relacement Tunnel. Read more

Hong Kong SIL(E) breakthrough

Excavation of the 3.2km Nam Fung Tunnel connecting Admiralty and Ocean Park stations on South Island Line (East) (“SIL(E)”) was successfully completed on 17 October 2014. The breakthrough marks an important step forward in the construction of the rail connection between the Southern District and the business centre on the northern part of Hong Kong Island. Read more

Crossrail East Tunnels complete

Crossrail’s train tunnels in Docklands and southeast London are now structurally complete, following the breakthrough by TBM Ellie at Victoria Dock Portal in east London. Read more

Isabelle North West Rail Link tunnel boring machine arrives

The third North West Rail Link tunnel boring machine has arrived in Sydney and has been named Isabelle by tunnellers working on the North West Rail Link. The first of the four massive tunnel boring machines were promised to be in the ground before the end of 2014, but now there are three on-site in the North West – well ahead of schedule. Read more

AECOM wins mega cavern contract

AECOM announced today that it has been appointed by the Drainage Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to provide investigation, design and construction supervision  consultancy for the relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) to caverns in Sha Tin, Hong Kong. The consultancy’s lump sum fee is around US$32M while the total contract value, including site supervision costs, amounts to US$130M. Read more

Hong Kong HATS 2 tunnels complete

Final breakthrough has been achieved on the Hong Kong Drainage Services Department’s Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS) Stage 2A. The breakthrough on the section crossing Victoria Harbour connecting Sai Ying Pun and Stonecutters Island marked the completion of the 21km of sewage tunnel on the scheme designed to further improve the water quality of Victoria Harbour.
