12 companies vie for Grand Istanbul Tunnel engineering studies

Twelve companies have submitted bids for research, project and engineering services for the three-level Grand Istanbul Tunnel megaproject. A total of 23 companies had received the project’s specifications.

DC Water completes First Street Tunnel

On December 22, DC Water celebrated the completion of tunneling for its First Street Tunnel project. Skanska/Jay Dee Joint Venture’s 21ft (6.4m) diameter Herrenknecht TBM, named Lucy, took five months to mine the 2,700ft long tunnel alignment under First Street, NW, from Channing Street to Rhode Island Avenue. This tunnel segment will ultimately connect to the five-mile-long Northeast Boundary Tunnel in 2022. Read more

Bertha resumes tunneling in Seattle

Early yesterday morning, December 22, Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP) moved the State Route 99 (Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement) tunneling machine ‘Bertha’ forward and built a tunnel ring at the bottom of the 120-foot-deep pit crews built to access and repair the machine. STP plans to tunnel a short distance further in the access pit before giving crews a break for the holidays.  Read more

B&P Tunnel DEIS released

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), Amtrak and the Baltimore City Department of Transportation released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the B&P Tunnel Project on December 18. Read more

Røssåga TBM sets Norwegian milestone

A crowd of crew members gathered to celebrate in front of a newly emerged hard rock TBM on December 10, 2015 in northern Norway, but their celebration was about more than just a breakthrough.  The 7.2m (23.6ft) diameter Robbins Main Beam machine had traversed incredibly hard rock, water inflows, and more to become the first TBM in the country to break through in over 20 years. AECOM announces Tideway award

AECOM has officially announced that it has been formally appointed as the lead design consultant for the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel in London, one of three major work packages on the scheme. AECOM’s client is the delivery partner for the central section, a joint venture (JV) of Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke. Read more

$50 Million loan approved for Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project

On December 9, the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved a $50 million loan from the Virginia Transportation Infrastructure Bank (“VTIB”) for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel’s (CBBT) Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel Project, which provides a fixed link between Virginia’s eastern shore and the Norfolk and South Hampton Roads region, in the United States. Unique Chilean pumped storage scheme to harness seawater and solar power

Chile’s Valhalla Energy plans to harness the country’s remarkable geography to make clean power by pumping seawater up into mountains during the day and releasing it at night. The project, called The Mirror of Tarapaca, is unusual for a hydropower scheme as it will be located in the Atacama Desert, one of the world’s driest. Read more

Bucharest Metro partial road collapse reported

Romanian media has reported a partial road collapse on the City Center to Drumul Taberei stretch of the Bucharest Metro Line 5. The road is damaged in the Eroilor area, one of the capital’s busiest residential areas. Contractors have poured some 190cum of concrete to stabilize the area whilst heavy monitoring checks for possible settlement. Read more

MTR’s XRL Milestone

A major milestone has been achieved in the construction of the Hong Kong Section of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link project (XRL) with the tunnel breakthrough of the final section of the 26km tunnel. Read more
