The Robbins Company merge with NHI

An agreement between The Robbins Company and Northern Heavy Industries (NHI) Group was finalized on June 28, 2016 in Shenyang, capital of northeast China’s Liaoning Province. This initial agreement is the first step of a three-phase merger process and gives NHI minority interest in The Robbins Company. Read more

John Holland has been awarded the first major Melbourne Metro Tunnel contract, which includes excavating massive shafts in the centre of Melbourne as part of preparations for the project’s 9km of twin tunnel under the city centre and five new underground stations. Read more

Bangalore breakthrough

June 8, 2016 saw one of two 6.4m diameter mixed-face EPB machines break through on the Namma Metro in Bangalore. After being launched in March 2015, the TBM named Kaveri made its way through its difficult 750m drive from Chickpet to Majestic. Read more

A world-class field of construction firms have been shortlisted to build Melbourne’s second river crossing. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan has announced three consortia have been chosen to tender for the design and construction of the $5.5bn Western Distributor that will slash congestion and take thousands of trucks off inner west streets. Contractor Metrostav has announced the breakthrough of its 9.8m diameter Herrenknecht hybrid TBM on the first tube of 4km long Ejpovice twin railway tunnels near Pilsen in the Czech Republic. Read more

Diamond Hill topping out celebrations

Hong Kong MTR’s Shatin to Central Link (SCL) project team celebrated the topping out of the Diamond Hill Station Extension on 6 June 2016. This is the third SCL station to be topped out, marking an important milestone for the 17km long, completely underground SCL project. Read more

SR99 making progress

Seattle Tunnel Partners has reported it has now bored more than one-half mile of the SR 99 tunnel on Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program. As of June 13, Bertha, the 57.5ft diameter Hitachi Zosen EPBM SR 99 tunneling machine, had traveled a total of 2,724 feet and installed 411 concrete rings. Read more

York Potash preferred contractors revealed

The Hochtief Murphy Joint Venture has been selected as preferred contractor for the UK’s 37km long, 6m diameter York Potash mineral tunnel transport system development. AMC UK – a joint venture between Thyssen Group and Redpath Group – has been selected as preferred contractors for mine site development. Read more

Femern A/S confirm contract awards

Femern A/S has signed four major construction contracts worth almost US$4.5bn with the international contractor consortia that will be responsible for the construction of the 18km Fehmarnbelt immersed tube tunnel between Rødbyhavn in Denmark and Puttgarden in Germany.
