ITA Tunnelling Awards 2016 finalists announced

On November 10th and 11th 2016, the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association will hold the second ITA Tunnelling Awards, this year in Singapore. Participation has been highly competitive this year, with 98 entries from 25 countries competing for awards in nine categories. Bertha resumes tunnelling as WSDOT counts the cost

Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program contractor, Seattle Tunnel Partners JV, resumed mining on July 18th following a month of routine and hyperbaric maintenance on Bertha, the 57.5ft diameter Hitachi Zosen EPBM being used to bore the 2.7km long road tunnel. The move has allowed Client, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), to review and publish the program and cost implications for the entire project. Read more

Granite scoops Connecticut tunnel contract

Granite Construction Incorporated has announced that the JV team comprised of Kenny Construction Company, a wholly-owned Granite subsidiary, and Obayashi Corporation has been awarded a $279M contract by The Metropolitan District to construct the 6.4km long, 5.5m diameter South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) in Hartford, Connecticut. Final government approval granted for York Potash

Sirius Minerals Plc has announced that it has received UK government approval for the Harbour Facilities element of its North Yorkshire polyhalite project. As a result, all major approvals for the Project, which includes the construction of a 37km long, 6m diameter mineral transport tunnel system, have now been granted. Read more

Revised Proposals Received for Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel

On July 15, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission announced that revised technical and price proposals had been received from all three teams in the competitive procurement to construct a new parallel tunnel at the Thimble Shoal Channel. Read more

Singapore prepares tender call for DTSS 2

PUB, Singapore’s national water agency and the National Environment Agency of Singapore (NEA), will be calling tenders from this year onwards for the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) Phase 2, which consists of some 40km of deep tunnel sewers and 10km of link sewers to be constructed using TBMs, and the Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) to spearhead the implementation of Singapore’s world-class used water and solid waste management solutions. Work starts on Brenner southern section

At an inaugural event attended by local and national officials along with representatives of the companies involved in the project, work began on the southern section of the 55km long Brenner Base Tunnel, starting at Fortezza, Italy, before going under the Isarco River. Read more

Boring begins on Scotland’s Shieldhall

Construction of the 5km long Shieldhall Tunnel, the biggest waste water tunnel ever to be built in Scotland, has started after Roseanna Cunningham, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform launched the project’s Herrenknecht TBM in the south of Glasgow. Read more

Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited (‘Leighton Asia’), in joint venture with China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited, has been awarded an A$1.58bn contract by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region for the construction of the 2.2km long Tseung Kwan O – Lam Tin Tunnel.
