AECOM Technology Corporation has been awarded the US$3.6M consultancy agreement for the feasibility study to relocate the Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works (STSTW) to caverns by the Drainage Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
STSTW is the largest secondary sewage treatment works in Hong Kong. AECOM will investigate the suitability and technical feasibility of Nui Po Shan as the cavern site. AECOM’s scope of work includes preliminary technical and impact assessments, ground investigation, preparation of an outline design for the engineering works, formulation of implementation strategies and programmes, and public engagement. It will also involve a planning review of the future land use of the existing STSTW for the purpose of establishing a business case for the relocation project. It is anticipated that the relocation will be able to release about 28 hectares of land for housing and other purposes that would enhance residents’ quality of life and bring extended benefits to the overall Sha Tin community and local environment.
“AECOM has been a long-term partner of Drainage Services Department,” said Alex Kwan, AECOM’s executive vice president, water & urban development, Asia. “We have a strong team of wastewater and geotechnical professionals who are dedicated to providing an innovative and holistic solution for the whole project. We will work closely with our client to establish a successful precedent for the future relocation of government facilities to caverns in Hong Kong.”
The study commenced in May 2012 and is expected to be completed in May 2014.
