Aecon awarded $279M Spadina Southern Tunnels contract in Toronto

Following a public opening of bids earlier this month, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) awarded its Sheppard West Station and Southern Tunnels contract, for the CA$2.63 billion Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE), to Aecon Buildings on Thursday, 18 November. Aecon – along with its tunnel subcontracting JV – won the contract with a bid of CA$279,078,688 million.

A joint venture consisting of McNally Construction, Kiewit Construction and Aecon Constructors will mobilise on site next month to excavate 2.6km (1.6-miles) of 5.4m (17.7ft) i.d. twin tube tunnel, using two client procured Lovat EPBMs and a client procured pre-cast segmental tunnel lining (built to specifications drafted by project-wide tunnel designer Hatch Mott MacDonald). The JV will extend the subway line northwards from the existing Downsview Station to the new Finch West station (see project alignment diagram).

The contract also includes construction of the new Sheppard West station, an integrated subway / Go Transit rail station, which will be located southeast of Sheppard Avenue and Bakersfield Street, at the north end of Downsview Park. The three-level station, to be constructed by Aecon Buildings, was designed by Earth Tech Canada (now Aecom) in partnership with Aedas architects and will feature integrated public art installations by Toronto artist Panya Clark Espinal.

Aecon came out ahead of a number of other bids including: Toronto Spadina Constructors (Obayashi/Flatiron/Kenaidan JV), which came in at $283,322,008 million; Dragados Canada/Ellis Don JV at $294,750,000; OHL Canada/FCC Construction at $311,862,300; and Strabag at $417,742,002.

Award of the project’s Highway 407 Station and Northern Tunnel’s contract, along with another four separate station construction contracts, are expected to follow over the coming month.
