Singapore Power awards contracts for S$2bn tunnels

Five construction companies have been awarded six contracts for Singapore Power’s largest project to date. The S$2bn Transmission Cable Tunnel Project will involve the construction of two 6m i.d. cross-island tunnels totaling 35km at 60m depth, to be built by a combination of drill and blast and TBM. Construction will begin at the end of this year for completion in 2018. The North-South Tunnel stretches 18.5km from Gambas to May Road whilst the East-West Tunnel totals 16.5km from Ayer Rajah to Paya Labar. The successful contractors are:
- Samsung C&T Corporation for Gambas, Sembawang and Mandai locations
- SK Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd for Mandai, Tagore and Ang Mo Kio locations
- Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd for Marymount, Thomson PIE, May Road locations
- Obayashi Corporation for Ayer Rajah, North Buona Vista, Holland locations
- SK Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd for Holland, Dunearn, Rangoon & May Road locations
- Nishimatsu Construction Co., Ltd – KTC Civil Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd Joint Venture for Kallang, Airport Road and Paya Lebarlocations
The deep tunnels are designed to overcome the existing congestion of underground space and utility services in Singapore. They will facilitate faster and more efficient maintenance and replacement of cables, thereby reducing the frequency of road-digging works and thus minimising inconvenience to the public in the long run.
Mr. Wong Kim Yin, Group Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Power said, “The deep cable tunnels will form the backbone of Singapore’s power supply, serving future generations effectively, securely and with minimum inconvenience. It will translate to improved standards of living and performance for our residential, industrial and commercial consumers.”
The tunnels will be located under major public roads and will not encroach into any private properties. Along with the tunnels, there will be 14 utility buildings built to house ventilation facilities and equipment, and provide access to the tunnels.
During the construction phase, Singapore Power will work closely with government agencies and community partners to minimise inconvenience to the public.
