Discs, Bits, and Scrapers (Tools). The Latest Developments in TBM Cutters

Cutting tools for both soft ground and hard rock have undergone substantial changes since their inception of disc cutters in the 1950’s. Hear about the current trends, including remote cutter monitoring, large diameter disc cutters, and sort ground tool configurations for pressurized ground with boulders; partial face cutting to abrasive sand and everything in between … Learn how to reduce the frequency of intervention

Presented by, Steve Smading, Product Manager for Cutters and Aaron Shanahan, Applications Engineer for Cutters, both of The Robbins Company.

Technical Webinar: Cross Passage Construction: Keeping it Safe

The construction of cross passages between twin-tube, TBMs tunnels in soft ground is a challenge to the industry and represents significant risks.  Ground Freezing is a safe method to construct these cross passages and has been used in difficult ground conditions and high water pressures in Europe. Recent advances in the technology and the planning and approaches successfully used in Europe should be considered for similar projects in the USA and elsewhere. In addition the use of temporary bulkheads and the sequence of cross passage construction are important safety measures for transportation tunnels.

Presented by, Mike Schultz and Helmut Hass of CDM

Technical Webinar: Fast Track Your Project with OFTA

Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA) is the latest method contractors are using to jump start boring and reduce project cost. OFTA is initially assembling larger diameter TBM’s at the jobsite. Find out about the process and logistics, and hear stories about the method’s time-saving and cost-cutting benefits.

Technical Webinar: Effective Design & Development of EPBM’s

Today’s EPB TBM projects are demanding in many ways—most tunnels have strict settlement limits, urban environments, and difficult ground conditions.  Despite these obstacles, EPB design has evolved to meet the challenges through:

  • Two-component back-fill to limit settlement
  • Customized ribbon-type screw conveyors for boulders
  • Active articulation for smooth steering in curves
  • Abrasion-resistant, non-clogging cutterheads

Presented by, Brian Khalighi, VP Engineering of The Robbins Company

Technical Webinar: Staying Grounded

What are the Limits of TBM Tunnelling in Difficult Conditions? Water inflows, mixed face geology, spalling and rock falls are just some of the realities of today’s high profile tunnelling projects.

What does the future hold for TBM design in such conditions? Find out how crews around the world have held squeezing ground and rock bursting at bay beneath more than 1,500 m of cover in China’s Sichuan Province, or 2,000 m below the Andes Mountains. Learn about new ground support systems on worldwide projects, as well as novel machine designs for variable geology.
