Nineteen workers have been rescued after a tunnel collapsed during construction in southwestern China, reports the official Xinhua News Agency. The workers, from a road construction crew in Shangrila county in Yunnan province, were buried on Tuesday when unstable geological conditions caused the tunnel to cave in.

Rescue workers heard signs of life and excavated a 20m long emergency evacuation passage, managing to send in water, oxygen and electrical supplies as the mission to free them continued.

The men were finally pulled out of the collapsed tunnel on Wednesday afternoon.
