Kolkata award and shortlist

West India’s Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) has awarded the first of the two contracts for the construction of the 8km long underground section on its 14km East-West Metro Line to ITD Cementation Ltd, whilst announcing the shortlist for the second contract.

ITC Cementation will construct the eastern 4.5km of twin tube tunnel from Subhas Sarobar to Central Metro Station, at a cost of US$200M.

KMRC will shortly award the second contract for the 3km long western twin tube section from Central Station to Howrah Maidan, which passes under the Hooghly River, known as UG-I. “We have completed the technical evaluation for the UG-I and if we get proper rates, the contract could be awarded within a couple of months,” a KMRC official said.

Shortlised are: Continental Engineering Corporation/Simplex Infrastructure Ltd JV; Doosan Engineering & Construction Co Ltd/IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects Ltd JV; DYWIDAG International GmbH/Larsen & Toubro Ltd JV; Shanghai Urban Construction (Group)/Senbo Engineering Ltd JV; Transtonnelstroy Ltd/Afcons Infrastructures Ltd JV.

Unlike the cut-and-cover method used on the existing north-south section of the Kolkata Metro, the East-West project will use TBMs to minimize surface disruptions.

For the construction of the 6 underground stations along the underground section, a top-down approach will be used for the same reasons.

AECOM is providing project management, scheme design, and construction management services for the US$1bn project that will connect Kolkata’s IT hub Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah.

Despite slight delays, officials claim the elevated section of the East-West corridor will be operational by October 2013 while the entire project, including the tunnelled section, will be in service by December 2014
