Tunnelling Journal is giving every reader free access to an exhaustive listing of international Tunnel Collapses. The document ‘Catalogue of Notable Tunnel Failure Case Histories’, courtesy of, and compiled by, the Mainland East Division, Geotechnical Engineering Office, Civil Engineering and Development Department of Hong Kong details 36 international collapses, and a further 6 specifically in Hong Kong. Each case, subject to the information available, includes a basic description of the event (many illustrated), the probable cause, the remedial measures undertaken, and the consequences and lessons learned. Some 60 references are also included for further reading. The document is live and will be updated from time to time. To download this must-have listing go to:

Hyperlinks in the contents list to the various collapses would be useful
An absolutely amazing list of tunneling failures, with references.
Well done.
Very interesting and useful summary and a good list of references. It would be nice to add some more recent failures such as the Cologne subway (March 2009) and Cairo Metro (September 2009).
Hi Anthony, nthanks very much for the message. I’m really glad it’s of use, and I totally agree, the problem is, we have to wait a while (often a very long while!) before collapses are ‘ok’ to talk about in print, but bear with us. Cairo and Cologne won’t be forgotten but we must await the official enquiry results.nGreat to hear from you and hope all is well!nTris

Hi Tris, hi Anthony,
I agree it is very interesting. But in your list to add, please ignore Cologne because it is not related to the tunnelling process. All signs are directing to the construction pit.
