On May 19th, 2025, the retractable circular full-face pipe jacking machine “CREC1563”, developed and manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG), successfully completed its Factory Acceptance Test. The machine will be utilized to bore the Kwu Tung and Cheung Sha Wan Sewage Pipeline Projects in Hong Kong.
The pipe jacking machine features an innovative foldable and retractable cutter head design, enhancing its ability to handle complex conditions and significantly improving ease of use and safety.
The project involves challenging geological conditions, including gravel, a narrow launch shaft space (3.1m in length and width), and the high construction risks associated with passing under a subsea area. To address these challenges, the machine has been designed with a compact excavation diameter of 3.04m and front and tail shield lengths of less than 3.1m, allowing it to be lifted into the narrow launch shaft space.
For high-risk subsea construction, there is the potential risk of abnormal cutter damage and excavation challenges when encountering gravel layers. To mitigate these risks, the machine incorporates an innovative retractable design, featuring a dual-shell shield structure and a foldable cutterhead. When facing subsea construction, the retractable pipe jacking machine can achieve breakthrough by retracting the cutterhead and withdraw it along with the inner shell.
