Excavation is now underway near Exhibition Station for the Ontario Line’s TBM launch site. A 16m deep shaft will become the starting point for two TBMs that will bore a roughly 6km pair of twin tunnels — the first subway tunnel project to start in Toronto’s downtown core in more than 60 years.
The two bored twin tunnels will run from just east of Exhibition Station to just west of the Don River. Following tunnelling, the launch shaft will become the portal where Ontario Line trains will transition, travelling east, from above to below ground.
When complete, the Ontario Line will be a 15.6km subway that will bring 227,500 more people in Toronto within walking distance to transit.
In November 2022, Clients, Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx awarded the fixed-price contract to Ontario Transit Group for $6B to design, build and finance the Ontario Line Southern Civil, Stations and Tunnel (South Civil) package.
The Ontario Transit Group team includes:
- Applicant Lead: Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc., VINCI Construction Grands Projets
- Design Team: AECOM Canada Ltd., COWI North America Ltd., GHD Limited, SENER Group
- Construction Team: Ferrovial Construction Canada Inc., Janin Atlas Inc.
- Financial Advisor: Agentis Capital
The Ontario Line project is being delivered through various P3, progressive design-build and traditional procurement contracts, which are all being staged accordingly for their successful delivery.
The Ontario Line will be a new rapid transit line running between the Ontario Science Centre and Exhibition/Ontario Place in Toronto, with 15 stations, including six interchange stations. The new line will provide more than 40 connections to other bus, streetcar, light-rail transit and regional rail services.
The South Civil contract is anticipated to be completed in 2030.
