The Metro 5 JV, consisting of Astaldi/Ansaldo/Ansaldo Breda, with Milan transport firm ATM, and Alstom, has been awarded the US$1.2bn concession to design, build and manage a 7km twin-bore, 10-station extension to the Milan Metro Line M5. Astaldi will undertake the construction using four TBMs at a cost of US$M598M.

The extension, connecting Garibaldi Station to the San Siro Stadium, is financed by the Ministry of Infrastructures, the Milan Municipality, and also by private funding.

Last summer, Metro 5 was awarded the concession to construct and manage the 6km long section of Line 5 running from Bignami to Garibaldi Station, featuring 9 stations.

The works for the new tunnel works are scheduled for completion in time for the EXPO 2015. At the end of the construction phase – scheduled to last 57 months – Metro 5 S.p.A. will operate the new subway stretch for a period of 25 years and 7 months.
