Several high-powered international JVs have confirmed their formation to tender for the main Tier 1 packages on Phase 1 of the UK’s HS2 project. The multiple contracts include the design and construction under the Early Contractor Involvement system of 39km of twin-bore tunnels to the value of some £3.8bn. Confirmed so far are:

  • FCC Construcción/Murphy/Laing O’Rourke
  • Ferrovial/BAM/Morgan Sindall/Amey
  • Bouygues/Sir Robert McAlpine/VolkerWessels
  • Balfour Beatty/Vinci

Rumoured but unconfirmed to Tunnelling Journal at time of writing are a Costain/Skanska JV, and a team from Eiffage/Carillion.

Also rumoured is a JV of Dragados/Hochtief/Kier, although a spokesman for Kier denied the company’s involvement.

Procurement of the tunnel contracts is planned for later this year with enabling works starting in 2016. The main tunnelling contracts construction will begin in 2018 for a Phase 1 opening date scheduled for 2026.
