The Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) and MMC-Gamuda KVMRT have signed an agreement for the Underground Works for Kuala Lumpur’s MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line. The US$2.77bn contract is for the design, construction and completion of the Underground Works between the Semantan North Portal and the Mauri South Portal.

Speaking after the signing at the MRT Headquarters, MRT Corp Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Axhar said the 9.5km underground section is a very important part of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line as it will serve the most heavily congested part of the city.

“The Joint Venture constructed the tunnel for the SMART Project which runs through the same karstic limestone geological formation that the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line tunnel will have to go through. I believe MMC-Gamuda will use the experience gained and apply the same to the MRT Project,” Azhar added.

Ten TBMs will be deployed to excavate the 9.5km of twin tube tunnels on the underground section of the 51km long MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line. The section will also include 7 Underground Stations.

Phase One of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line from Sungai Buloh to Semantan will be operational by 2016, whilst Phase Two from Semantan to Kajang will be operational by July 2017.
