The FCC/OHL & COPISA JV has announced the breakthrough of the first of its two Lovat TBMs on the Terrassa Railways Tunnel Project, in Terrassa, Spain having completed the 3.7km drive on January 30th, 2010.

The 6.9m diameter, mixed face EPBM named “Egara” crossed three station boxes and completed the drive in 383 days, with a best 24hr production rate of 49.5m, or 33 rings, and a best monthly production rate of 830m, 553 rings.

The second Lovat machine, mining the parallel tunnel is scheduled to breakthrough this month, thereby completing boring works on the Terrassa Project.

The good news for Lovat follows an announcement late last year by Christopher C. Curfman, President of Caterpillar Global Mining Division that the company had acquired an additional 220,000 square feet facility so that Lovat can accommodate the growing demand for TBMs.

The new Manufacturing & Logistics Centre (MLC) is located just a few kilometers away from the main facility in Toronto, Canada and will have increased space for light manufacturing, warehousing, and additional office space
