Mike Mooney, Bruce E. Grewcock Distinguished Chair Professor of Underground Construction & Tunneling at Colorado School of Mines, has been inducted into the National Academy of Construction.
The honor recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the construction industry. Mooney was honored for “his significant contributions to tunnel and earthwork construction technology, process improvement, and recognized leadership in underground construction research, education and outreach.”
A member of the Mines faculty since 2003, Mooney is the founding director of the university-wide Center for Underground and director of the Underground Construction & Tunnel Engineering graduate degree program. His research and teaching focuses on planning, analysis, design, construction, monitoring and rehabilitation of tunnels, underground civil structures, and other transportation, energy and utility infrastructure systems. He also provides technical expertise to project owners, designers, contractors and equipment suppliers, serving on project and agency expert panels and participating as an expert witness in project claims and litigation.
A licensed Professional Engineer, Mooney holds a PhD in civil engineering from Northwestern University, MS in civil engineering from the University of California, Irvine, BS in civil engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and a BA in physics from Hastings College.
The National Academy of Construction is an organization of approximately 500 industry leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the construction industry. In addition to honoring the personal contributions of its members, the academy provides its leadership and expertise to a variety of organizations, governmental and nongovernmental, for the betterment of the industry and nation, fostering collaboration, future improvement, and building the next generation of leaders.
