Murphy & Sons Limited (Murphy) has been awarded a new US$16M contract by UK Power Networks for the partial design, construction and project management of a 1.3km long cable tunnel from Brentfield Park to Willesden in North West London. The tunnel will be used to accommodate additional electricity cables to support the growing demand for energy supplies from UK Power Networks.

In addition to the 2.44m diameter tunnel, Murphy will construct three vertical shafts and 143m of shallow tunnel. The contract also includes the installation of ventilation equipment and cable support brackets.

Commenting on the contract award, Darren Ramsay, Tunnelling Director for Murphy, said: “We are very proud to continue our relationship with UK Power Networks on this contract. We will be utilising our in-house resources and experience to deliver the works, including secant piling for one of the shafts.”

Works started on site at the beginning of October, with completion in August 2013.
