The Swiss government has announced it has decided to build a second road tunnel through the Gotthard mountain range in central Switzerland at a cost to the Swiss Federation of some US$2.91bn. The second tunnel, planned to open by 2027, will allow the current 16km Gotthard Road Tunnel to be closed for much needed renovation works.

A statement by the federal Council said, “After a careful study and comparison of all aspects, the Federal Council has concluded that the construction of a second tube, followed by rehabilitation of existing tunnel was the most wise. This not only helps to increase the functionality, security, compatibility and availability of the Gotthard route, but also to meet the demand of Ticino, which wanted to maintain a good road link to the north during the tunnel closure.”

More details when they become available.
