Skanska has been awarded a contract worth US$143M by Costain to work with them on the US$318M project to construct almost 33km of cable tunnels for National Grid in London. The team will be responsible for the construction of the 19.9km long high voltage electricity cable tunnel between Hackney and Willesden, and the 12.1km long tunnel from Kensal Green and Wimbledon.
Work, which also includes the construction of access shafts and head houses for electrical equipment, will start this year. The 3m-4m diameter TBM driven tunnels run through mostly London Clay, and will feature a segmental lining.
Tunnelling is due for completion by end of 2014 and with all associated works completed in November 2018.
