On April 9th, 16.64m diameter TBM “Jianghai”, designed and developed by China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI), was launched at Haimen, Nantong City, at the estuary of the Yangtze River, on the world’s longest underwater highway tunnel.
The engineering/geological conditions on the Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel are challenging. The TBM with a 145m length, an approximate 5,000t weight, and a total installed power of 11,300kw, will have to complete long-distance mining of 9.3km in a single drive, passing through complex geological zones such as muddy and silty clay mixed with silt, fine sand composite formation etc. The maximum tunnel depth is some 75m, with a maximum water pressure of 0.75MPa. The tunnel features all of the characteristics associated with an ultra-long drive distance, ultra-large diameter, ultra-high water pressure, ultra-large depth, and complex working conditions, which imposes high requirements on the wear resistance and reliability of the cutterhead, cutting tools and slurry transportation system components.
While crossing the Yangtze River and the embankments on both sides, strict settlement control, limited access to the river for site investigation, and unforeseeable ground conditions must be dealt with.
