Work is ramping up at the Sydney Metro West site at The Bays with preparations in full swing to construct the new 24km metro railway line that will transform travel between Greater Parramatta and the Sydney CBD. Two 7m diameter double-shield, hard rock, gripper-type Herrenknecht TBMs ‘Daphne and Beatrice’ are being prepared for re-launch by the Acciona Ferrovial Joint Venture in the coming weeks, as they make their way from the Five Dock Metro Station site to Burwood North Station site on the project’s Central Section.
In preparation, hundreds of precast tunnelling segments have been delivered to the site to support the tunnelling activity from The Bays to Sydney Olympic Park, with more than 288 segments stored at the site at any one time.
TBMs Beatrice and Daphne launched last year from the western side of The Bays station box. Both machines have progressed significantly in their tunnelling journey, having installed approximately 30,732 segments to line the new tunnel walls.
At the eastern end of the site, work has commenced to prepare the 32m deep station box for the launch of two new TBMs from The Bays to tunnel under Darling Harbour towards the city in mid-2024.
The TBMs, each weighing about 1,300 tonnes, are the final two of six tunnelling machines for Sydney Metro.
A second, supersized shed on the western side of The Bays site is being used for storing excavated material after it is transferred from the TBMs on conveyor belts. The shed holds a maximum of 40,000 tonnes of material that is continuously being moved out of by trucks for reuse on other sites across Sydney.
These are the first of six TBMs being used to build the 24km of tunnels from the Sydney CBD to Parramatta, which have been split into three sections.
John Holland, CPB Contractors (CPB) and Ghella joint venture (JCG JV) will deliver the Eastern Tunnelling Package featuring 3.5km of metro rail tunnels between The Bays and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD, whilst the Gamuda Australia/Laing O’Rourke Consortium has been awarded the $2.16bn Western Tunnelling contract to deliver 9km of twin metro rail tunnels between Sydney Olympic Park and Westmead.
Sydney Metro West will double the rail capacity between Sydney’s two biggest CBDs once passenger services commence in 2030.
