UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed the cancellation of the A303 road upgrade project that includes the 3.2km long Stonehenge Tunnel, as part of the Labour Government’s spending review on 29th July.
The move comes as the UK’s newly elected government looks to plug a US$35bn spending gap in the country’s public finances.
In October 2022 scheme client, National Highways awarded the MORE consortium, comprising Webuild (42.5%), FCC Construcción (42.5%) and BeMo Tunnelling UK (15%), the A303 Stonehenge – Main Works Contract that covers the construction of the proposed Stonehenge tunnel’s civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and technology components, including the TBM, along with the approach roadworks and structures and the environmental components between Amesbury and Berwick Down in southern England. Construction was to last five years.
