On January 6, 2023, the world’s largest combined rectangular pipe jacking machine “CREC 1179”, developed and manufactured by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group, Co. Ltd. (CREG), successfully rolled off the production line in Zhengzhou, Henan province.

With an 11.29m width and a 13.55m height, CREC 1179 is composed of upper and lower components and has, according to CREC, the world’s largest tunnel face to date. The innovative machine will be used for the construction of Shasan Station on Shenzhen Metro Line 12. This machine will bore directly under the city’s commercial district in a bid to strictly control ground settlements. To ensure this, CREC 1179 has been designed with multiple cutter heads equipped with multiple screw conveyors and adopts the micro-benching tunnelling technique and a measurement and control system to realize the excavation with its shallow overburden and large cross section. The machine could go a long way to guaranteeing a safe, high-quality and highly efficient construction solution for the construction of metro station, says CREC.
