Lucknow Metro’s first TBM breakthrough

Workers from the Gulermak-TATA Projects JV, representatives from TBM manufacturer, TERRATEC, and officials from the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) have witnessed the successful completion of Lucknow Metro’s first TBM-driven tunnels on Phase 1 A, part of its 22.88km-long (Phase 1 A) Lucknow Metro North-South line in Uttar Pradesh, India. Slurry acceptance for Mumbai Metro

The first of two Slurry TBMs, a rebuilt 6.65m diameter machine, passed its factory acceptance on September 4, 2017 in Singapore. The machine, fitted with a Robbins cutterhead and outer shields, is destined for the Mumbai Metro Line 3 under contract UGC03 for the Dogus-Soma JV (DSJV), and will begin excavation in late 2017.  The factory acceptance for a second 6.65m diameter Slurry TBM will be conducted by the end of 2017. NorthConnex tunnels hit halfway

Construction of Sydney’s 9km long NorthConnex twin tunnels has reached the halfway point. Contractor JV on the $2.9bn design build project, Transurban made up of Bouygues and Lend Lease, is using 20 roadheaders, 24 hours per day to deliver the scheme where started construction in 2015 and is due for completion in 2019. LTA awards three contracts on CCL6

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded the first three civil contracts for Circle Line 6 (CCL6) totalling S$1.75bn. Works on these three contracts are expected to commence by the end of 2017 and complete by 2025.

COWI to design one of Scandinavia’s largest metro projects

A joint venture between COWI A/S and Multiconsult ASA has won the contract to design the Fornebu Line (Fornebubanen), an 8.5km long extension of the Oslo metro that will link the Fornebu peninsula to the Norwegian capital. Read more

Ultra-high strength sprayed concrete challenged

Some projects in the Middle East are using ultra-high strength sprayed concrete which reaches strengths of 80 to 90 MPa after 28 days, according to Benoit de Rivaz, global tunnelling manager at Bekaert Maccaferri Underground Solutions. The high-strength concrete, selected for its durability and early demoulding performance, requires higher and higher strength fibres. Read more

Green light for Stonehenge Tunnel

The route for the UK’s £1.6bn A303 upgrade, a key part of the ‘South West expressway’, has been published by the Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and includes the controversial 2.8km long Stonehenge Tunnel, effectively giving the green light to its construction. Read more

First batch of DTSS 2 contracts awarded

PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, has appointed Ed Zublin AG (Singapore Branch), Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. and Koh Brothers Building & Civil Engineering Contractor (Pte.) Ltd. Joint Venture, and Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited (Singapore Branch) – to design and build the first batch of 30km of deep tunnels and link sewers for the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) Phase 2.
