Italian tunnelling specialist SELI has signed an agreement for a global collaboration with Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd of Japan.

In accordance with the agreement, SELI and Kawasaki will combine their resources and experience in engineering, manufacturing, field services, and operation of TBMs focusing on EPBMs from subway tunnel diameter to super-large diameter TBMs, an area the companies say will be an ever growing market in both European and North/Latin America countries.

The joint agreement is not simply limited to a project-to-project collaboration, but is foreseen as a way to develop new technologies, and increase efficiency in the servicing and operation of TBMs.

Kawasaki has developed EPBM technology for more than 30 years, whilst SELI both developed and subsequently gained a wide range of experienced in the Double Shield TBM field, since the method’s inception more than 40 years.

Kawasaki and SELI plan to, through the agreement, increase their share in the TBM production market and become a stronger international competitor alongside the few other major players in the TBM market.

A new, and much larger SELI factory facility in Aprilia (Rome) will support the increased number of orders.
