CRCHI EPBM Launched on Santiago Metro Line 7

May 6th saw the launch of the China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation Limited (CRCHI)  9.8m diameter EPBM “Matukana” on the 26km long Santiago Metro Line 7. The 105m long, 1400 tonne machine will be used by CRCC to bore 6.7km of tunnel on its 7.9km long construction contract.

During tunnelling, the TBM will pass through sandy soil layers, limestone and other strata, with strict settlement control requirements in place for the undercrossing of the dense residential areas above the alignment. The formation’s boulders will pose a severe test to the cutterhead, say CRCHI. The TBM has a compound cutterhead equipped with 19 inch disc cutters, with cutting tools to be changed after every 2km of excavation.

Once the project is completed, the travel time along the entire line will be shortened from 90 minutes to 43 minutes, providing a convenient service for more than 1.36 million residents.
