In the UK Budget today (11th March), Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak has given the A303 road improvement scheme the go-ahead, green lighting the construction of the controversial 3.2km long Stonehenge Tunnel. In the country’s Second Road Investment Strategy (RIS2) – Sunak said the government is boosting regional connectivity and transforming connections through the largest ever investment in England’s strategic roads.  Through RIS2 the government will spend over £27bn between 2020 and 2025. Also included in the portfolio of projects to be constructed is the Lower Thames Crossing, a 4.3km long twin-bore tunnel of 16m+ diameter each, which will increase road capacity across the Thames east of London by 90%.
