The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge Authority has announced China Communications Construction Co as winner of the design and build contract for the artificial islands and 6.7km long immersed tube tunnel section of the US$5.5bn, 29.6km long Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).

The team members of the joint venture include AECOM Asia Company Ltd., Shanghai Urban Construction (Group) Co., China Highway Planning and Design Institute Inc., COWI A/S, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering & Rail Transit Design and Research Institute and CCCC Fourth Harbor Engineering Investigation and Design Institute.

The Authority said, “Since the artificial islands and tunnel will be constructed in a sea environment, it is anticipated that the technical difficulties and challenges will be of a world-class level taking into account the long distance ventilation and safety design, prefabrication and marine transportation of the huge pipe segments, joining pipe segments under high water pressure as well as construction of the west and east artificial islands.”

The contract is expected to begin this year with project completion scheduled for 2016. (Diagram: Hong Kong Highways Department)
