Metro Vancouver, in Canada, has awarded a CA$12.8-million construction management contract to McMillen Jacobs Associates for its $450 million Annacis water supply tunnel.
The tunnel will be excavated deep underground using a TBM that will be launched from a vertical shaft on the Surrey side of the Fraser River and will bore under river to a vertical exit shaft on the New Westminster side. It will be 4.5m (14.7ft) in diameter and 2.3km (1.4-miles) long between shafts and have a 2.6m (8.5ft) diameter steel water main inside.
The project is currently in the detailed design stage, which is expected to wrap up at the end of this year. Procurement for the construction phase is planned from January through July 2020. Construction is expected to start in late summer 2020 and will take approximately 5 years to complete.
