Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded two more civil contracts, C922 and C935, with a total value of US$310.6M for the Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) project.

Contract 922 for the construction of Expo station and the overrun tunnels has been awarded to Samsung C&T Corporation for a contract sum of US$171.5M. The Expo station located next to the Singapore Expo and the Changi Business Park will be an interchange station with the East-West Line Expo station. It will serve commuters going to the Singapore Expo, Changi Business Park and the Changi Airport.

Samsung C&T Corporation has extensive experience in the construction of rail infrastructural projects in Singapore and Korea. They are currently involved in several construction projects such as the Marina Coastal Expressway, the North South Line extension and the construction of Downtown Line 1 Telok Ayer station and associated tunnels.

Contract 935 is for the construction and completion of Sungei Road station. It has been awarded to Leighton Offshore Pte Ltd/John Holland Pty Ltd (Singapore Branch) JV at US$139.1M. Located between the intersection of Jalan Besar and Weld Road, Sungei Road station will serve the HDB estate of Rowell Court and businesses in the area.

Under the contract, the joint venture will construct the new Sungei Road Station, a four-level station box with a platform, mezzanine, concourse and linkway, along with comprehensive civil, structural, architectural, plumbing, drainage, landscaping and reinstatement works.
Twin tunnels approximately 770m in length between Sungei Road Station and Bencoolen Station will be constructed using two TBMs.
“Today’s award builds on our recent success in Hong Kong and reflects the strength of the partnership between John Holland and Leighton Asia, which brings together Leighton Asia’s local construction knowledge with John Holland’s specialist skills in underground construction,” said Glenn Palin, John Holland’s Group Managing Director.
Rob Muley, General Manager of John Holland’s Tunnelling business, said the award highlights John Holland’s depth of experience in underground construction.
“This new contract will draw from our considerable knowledge of major transport projects and our understanding of construction methodologies using TBMs; we look forward to the successful delivery of this project in partnership with Leighton Asia.”

Leighton Offshore Pte Ltd and John Holland Pty Ltd are Australian companies with extensive experience in the construction of railway projects. This is their first MRT contract in Singapore.

Construction of the two stations and tunnels will start next month and are targeted to complete in 2017.
The 21km long DTL3 is the final stretch of the 42km Downtown Line. It will enhance rail connectivity in the eastern corridors to the Central Business District (CBD) and developments in the Marina Bay area. Fully underground, DTL3 comprises 16 stations, including three interchange stations: MacPherson, Tampines and Expo. These interchange stations will link to the Circle Line (CCL) and the East West Line (EWL), providing greater accessibility and significantly improve travel time for commuters.
