Waterview reaches halfway

The first of the twin 2.4km long road tunnels on the NZ Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection project has been completed. Alice, the project’s 14.4m diameter Herrenknecht EPBM, broke through on 29th September, at the end of her 10-month journey from Owairaka to Waterview. Read more

Arup has been appointed by CERN to undertake conceptual design studies for both the 100km long tunnel engineering and geotechnical considerations for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study. Read more

Tideway gets UK government go-ahead

Thames Water has today been given the go-ahead by the UK Government to start building London’s $4.2bn, 25km long tunnelled ’super sewer’ which will tackle the sewage pollution in to the tidal River Thames. Six TBMs will bore the route from five drive sites. Read more

Bouygues wins €490M Hong Kong MTR contract

Through its subsidiaries Dragages Hong Kong and Bouygues Travaux Publics, Bouygues Construction has won a contract worth HK$5.2bn (roughly €490M) from MTR Corporation for the construction of 2×2 tunnels that will form part of a 6km extension of the Shatin to Central Link. Read more

NSW Premier Mike Baird and Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian have kicked off the 15km twin tube tunnelling works on the $8.3bn North West Rail Link – Australia’s biggest public transport project. Read more

Balfour Beatty sells PB

Balfour Beatty has announced the sale of its professional services division, Parsons Brinckerhoff, to WSP Global Inc. for a cash consideration of US$1,352.5M (£820M).  The sale price assumes cash of US$110M (£67M) is retained within Parsons Brinckerhoff. Read more

STP releases animated video of repairs to the SR 99 tunneling machine

Seattle Tunnel Partners (STP) – the Washington State Department of Transport’s (WSDOT) design-build contractor on Seattle’s SR-99 Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement tunnel project – has completed the walls for a circular shaft that will provide access to repair damage to the main bearing system on the world’s largest TBM, the 57.5ft (17.52m) Hitachi Zosen EPB machine ‘Bertha’. TERRATEC TBM to Istanbul Metro

TERRATEC has announced a new TBM delivery for the Istanbul Metro in Turkey on August 28th after the successful performance during workshop testing. The official ceremony was held at TERRATEC’s facilities in the presence of representatives from the client, a joint venture amongst the parties of Gülermak, Kolin and Kalyon (GKKJV). Read more

Dr Winterberg joins EPC

Elasto Plastic Concrete (EPC) has appointed Dr. Ralf Winterberg (MSc PhD Civil Engineering) as Group Chief Engineer.  His primary responsibilities will be the coordination of the group technical development and R&D, the continued development of synthetic fibre technologies and the development of global design standards for the use of synthetic fibre reinforcement.
