Arge U2, a JV comprising Strabag/Porr has been presented with the 6.84m diameter Herrenknecht EPBM it will use to bore a 2.1km long twin bore extension to Vienna’s Subway Line 2 for client – Wiener Linien – the operator of the Vienna subway system. The milestone event happened on 30th January at the Herrenknecht factory in Schwanau.
Ralph Lickert, Project Manager at Herrenknecht, said, “The Herrenknecht EPB Shield is the optimal machine type for the predominantly clayey geology that we expect according to the preliminary investigations.”
The drive under the city centre will start at the future Matzleinsdorfer Platz Station, from where the machine will drive the first 2.1km of tunnel northwards to Augustinplatz. The machine will then be pulled back through the precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel to drive the parallel tube from Matzleinsdorfer Platz.
Vienna is investing in the expansion of its public transportation systems in response to its growing population. More than two million people are expected to be living in the capital by 2030. The investment in the line extensions will create and secure around 30,000 jobs.
